A Special Tribute To John Sidney (From DTA Tasmania)

27 Nov 2003

Following my recent visit to Hobart, the editor of the Diversional Therapist's Newsletter in Tasmania sent me a copy of the following special tribute to John Sidney which was published in their newsletter soon after John died. Thank you Gillian for your permission to published it here on our news page.

A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO JOHN SIDNEY

I’m sure a lot of you would remember John Sidney. John was a very well known entertainer and gave great entertainment and joy to many people including the residents of the Queen Victoria Home. He was a regular on Sunday mornings in the Main Lounge and always attracted a large crowd of enthusiastic followers. He was also a guest at some of the larger functions in the Auditorium, bringing along his friends Charlie and the emu on one occasion.

One of our residents told me a story that came to mind from Johns childhood how at the age of 8 years and onwards his parents offered him 6 pence to go from the piano and play outside.

For many years John was a great favourite at Wrest Point. Many people remember dancing to his lovely music.

John recorded some of his music on CD which a friend had marketed and sold 200 to a buyer in America. The buyer wished he had been aware of John's talents years ago.

We will always remember John's many talents and his friendship. He is certainly sadly missed at the Queen Victoria Home.

John died on 11 November 2002 age 75 years.

Gillian
